Schema therapy

Michael is an Accredited Schema Therapist with the ISST (International Society of Schema Therapy). He provides Schema Therapy to clients with a wide range of presenting problems.

What are schemas?
A schema is like a lens through which we see ourselves, other people, and the world. Schemas are broad patterns that are made up of thoughts, memories, emotions, and physical sensations. They influence what we pay attention to, how we interpret information, and the memories we recall. Schemas develop when our emotional needs aren’t met in childhood or adolescence. They can affect us throughout life and contribute to problematic coping strategies and dysfunctional behaviours.

How can Schema Therapy help me?
Schema Therapy can help you discover the origins of any unmet emotional needs, identify and change the maladaptive patterns associated with these schemas, and ensure your emotional needs are met in a healthy way.

One of the defining and unique components of Schema Therapy is the use of experiential techniques. A common dilemma voiced by people experiencing emotional difficulties is that even though they know something to be true intellectually, they do not feel it or believe it to be true on an emotional level. As well as addressing our cognitions, Schema Therapy was designed to target the deeper, more emotional side of our beliefs through the use of emotion-focused techniques, which get below the more conscious, intellectual level.

Through Schema Therapy, people can develop a greater sense of self-worth and adequacy, explore ways of building nurturing relationships, and develop and achieve goals in working toward a healthy, rich and meaningful life.

Schema Therapy is an interactive therapeutic approach which uses a range of techniques within a supportive and trusting therapeutic relationship, and is a longer-term treatment option (15 or more sessions).
